This administration will always align with the interests of the people: President Dr Mohamed Muizzu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that this administration is for the people and will always align with their interests. He made the statement in his address at the “Hiyaavehi Financing Program” launch on Tuesday morning.

The President noted that housing was one of the most pressing issues this administration faced. He said that seeking long-term and sustainable solutions for this is vital, and as such, he gave reassurance that the “Hiyaavahi Financing Program” scheme would not be halted one year later. The scheme, he added, was part of the Dhivehinge Raajje manifesto. The scheme fulfils the loan scheme that capped housing loan interest at five per cent and would allow homeowners anywhere in the country to upgrade their residences.

The President noted that the 2025 budget prioritised housing, with MVR 1 billion allotted. President Dr Muizzu added that this amount will also be apportioned in the next four years’ budget. Therefore, he said that MVR 2 billion of housing loans would be leveraged every year from this MVR 1 billion addition to the scheme.

The President noted that the administration will seek solutions for homeowners unable to finish ongoing and planned work on their residences.

In his address, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reflected on his aims of providing adequate housing options to all citizens. He added that his priority was to fulfil the pledges made in his interactions with citizens in various meetings and platforms.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu thanked the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), Bank of Maldives (BML) and Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB), partners in this venture.

The President announced the interest-capped housing loan scheme in his address to the nation on this year’s Independence Day.

Gov’t releases Academic Calendar 2025

The Government has released the academic calendar for next year, with the annual holidays scheduled for December.

The academic-year-end holidays were shifted to June/July 2021, following a one-year and six-month delay of the 2020 academic year prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as this period coincides with the rainy monsoon, public concerns were raised, as there were significant challenges for families to travel and enjoy their holidays. The decision to shift the year-end holidays was taken against 70% of those who gave their opinion.

During the presidential election campaign, citizens requested President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu address this issue and change the academic calendar to how it was before. After the president assumed office, he decided to gradually move the commencement date of the new academic year back to the beginning of the year.

According to the tentative academic calendar, the new academic year is scheduled for April 6, with teachers starting their preparation work from April 3 onwards. The first term holidays are from July 28 to August 7, with the second term beginning on August 10. However, students will have a midterm break from September 21-25 during the second term. With this, the second term concludes on December 25, and the year-end holidays will officially begin on December 28. The annual holiday will last till January 22, and the academic year for 2026 is slated to commence on January 27.
